HOME-ENTRY CEREMONY

Griha Pravesh Puja

The ritual performed before a family moves into a new home, to purify the space and invite prosperity, health, and harmony under its roof.

About This Ceremony

What it is, and when it's performed

Griha Pravesh literally means "entry into the house." It is performed before or immediately after moving into a new home — including flats bought resale, provided a fresh puja hasn't already been done there.

The ceremony centers on Vastu Shanti (pacifying the directional deities of the plot) and an invocation to Vaastu Purush, followed by a havan and the formal, auspicious first entry of the family.

Muhurat (the auspicious date and time) matters a great deal here — most families check a Panchang before fixing the date, since the ceremony is meant to set the tone for the household's future.

What It Involves

The key moments of the ceremony

Vastu Shanti

Pacifies the Vaastu Purush and the plot's directional energies before entry.

A sacred fire ceremony invoking Agni as witness, usually the centerpiece of the puja.

First entry rituals

Milk brought to a boil at the threshold, a kalash carried in first, and lighting the first diya.

Muhurat timing

Performed on a date and time chosen from the Panchang for the family and the plot.

Frequently Asked

Griha Pravesh Puja — common questions

Can Griha Pravesh be done for a resale flat, not just a new construction?

Yes. If a puja hasn't already been performed in that specific home before, a Griha Pravesh (sometimes a shorter Vastu Shanti) is still recommended before you move in.

How long does a Griha Pravesh Puja take?

A full ceremony with havan typically runs 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on the pandit's tradition and how many family rituals (like a Satyanarayan Puja) are combined with it.

Do I need to arrange the puja samagri myself?

It depends on how you do it. With an At Home Puja booking, the visiting pandit can guide you on what to arrange or bring it themselves. With Ritvik, the app tells you exactly what to keep ready before you begin.

Can Ritvik guide a family through Griha Pravesh without a pandit present?

Ritvik currently covers the core chanting and step-by-step guidance for home ceremonies; a full Griha Pravesh with havan is best done with a pandit present given the number of coordinated steps — that's exactly what At Home Puja is for.
